PATRICK, Minn. (WVU) - A new study found that a medication used to treat high blood pressure was more effective than a drug used to lower cholesterol levels. A New Zealand study reported in theJournal of the American Medical Associationshows that the prescription drug Lasix, used to treat high blood pressure, may lower the risk of stroke in people who have high cholesterol levels.
The research, published online Tuesday in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine, is the first to test the effects of Lasix in humans. The results are based on an in vitro study that was performed by researchers at New Zealand-based U. S. University College of Physicians and Surgeons, which used the medication to treat high blood pressure in people. U. researchers had previously linked the drug with a heart attack or stroke in patients with high cholesterol.
"The risk is small," said U. researchers who study the research.
"There is very little information available about the safety of this drug in humans. However, it is an important drug because it is an extremely safe and effective treatment for high blood pressure.
